Arrived in Napoli yesterday, jetlagged but excited. Took some portra 400 and portra 800 35 mm shots of Via Toledo and some night shots of Neapolitan alleyways (which has turned my life long fascination of alley ways on its head - it blows Boston and New York away). Lit candles in two immense churches. Shot a mini series on Napoli street kids (11-13 years old) - who stole from a sweets cart and ran away like a New Wave film of the sixties, taunting the cart man as he cursed them and shook his fist as they ran away. I found them later by the shore, bumming their first cigarette off some kissing teenagers. The biggest boy, the one in charge, had dirty blond hair and a long gait. He stuck the cigarette in each friends mouth, dictating how to smoke I imagine. I shot them, for the most part, incognito.
This castle is across from our hotel. I took this from the rooftop at breakfast with my phone. On to the museo Capidimonte to wander the renaissance grounds and see Artemesia Gentileschi’s Naples “Judith Slaying Holofornes”.
It’s hot hot hot and sunny. Packed a few summery things thankfully but packed for autumn so we’ll be rewashing in the sink a lot I think!
