the most perfect garden in the world
The Villa Borghese garden park is the most beautiful, breathtaking city park I’ve ever seen. When in Rome, we usually stay on the Via Veneto at the gorgeous Grande Albergo Flora. It’s next to a 3000 year old wall which leads to the park. We take a leisurely stroll through the park every morning, passing by cyclists and flaneurs, children and fruit sellers. There’s a bird...

A couple years ago I stood on the roof of the “wedding cake”, aka “Altare della Patria” (Altar of the Motherland) or “Il Vittoriano”, to spy, for the first time, a bird’s eye view of Rome, a city I had grown to know over the years, stealing away to her streets whenever I could (which was never often enough). I shall return today right there, Where I had been at spring. I’m neither sorry, nor unfair - I only darkness bring. It’s very deep, it’s like velvet, It’s dearest to us Like a dry leaf from a tree fled, Like a wind’s whistle, that’s lone spread Over the smooth of ice.  Anna Akhmatova, 1959

i have a strong affection for old cemeteries...
especially the ones in New Orleans and in this photograph, the Englishman’s Cemetery (the Protestant Graveyard), in Rome, Italy, on the Aventine, where Keats and Shelley are buried. It’s a beautiful place to roam all afternoon. It still feels like a secret indulgence between myself and the poets. A silent one.

See the full gallery on Posterous My beautiful New Orleans, my home away from home. I’m just a yankee barbarian at the iron lattice gates, peeking in. I can’t wait until I return to you in October.

Florentine antique carousel, Florence, Italy, 2008
I’ve always loved antique carousels. I’m lucky to live near one. This one in Florence was really pretty. What a perfect day that was.
